Area Information

Grangeville is a little town in the heart of Idaho where the spirit of the West is alive and well. Located in the middle of the state and is second only to Alaska in designated wilderness areas.

Idaho County was actually the first part of the modern state of Idaho to be given the name "Idaho." The county was founded as "Idaho County" in 1861 when the land was still part of the Washington Territory. The region was named in honor of the steamboat "Idaho" that was launched on the Columbia River in 1860. The Idaho territory was subsequently laid out and officially created two years later, in 1863.

The first building was erected in future Grangeville in 1876, after citizens of nearby Mount Idaho refused to allow the Grange Hall to be built within their town. Donated property on the prairie became the site of Grange Hall, which in turn served as the center of social life and eventual development in the area. After 30 years of expansion, Grangeville became the county seat in 1902.

Average high temperatures in Grangeville climb to 83 degrees Fahrenheit in August, and average lows drop to 24 degrees in December.

Grangeville is home to two public schools that serve students of every level from pre-school up through the end of high school. There is also a private elementary/middle school for families who prefer to go another route. Higher education facilities that are available within an hour of town include the University of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State College. You can also reach Washington State University or Walla Walla Community College in 90 minutes.

Syringa General Hospital serves the area's health care needs.

Idaho County Airport is a public yet rural facility that can serve transport needs or provide a launching point for recreational pilots.

Nez Perce National Forest covers a land full of beautiful rivers and steep mountains. You can boat and fish on the rivers, hike or bike along trails, camp out, go for a horse ride, hunt local wildlife, enjoy a picnic or just watch the wildlife.

Grangeville celebrates "Border Days" over the Independence Day weekend each year. This event features parades, dances, art shows and the state's oldest rodeo.
